We planted endangered water lilies

We have planted the endangered aquatic plant “water iris” in the biotope within the power plant.

This water iris was carefully cultivated at the Tago District Community Center, where residents relocated en masse from the Gamo area after the Great East Japan Earthquake. It was generously donated by members of the community. Once widely native to Japan’s waterways, it is now classified as Vulnerable (CR) on the Ministry of the Environment’s Red List, meaning it faces an increased risk of extinction.

Having sprouted from old seeds triggered by the earthquake’s tsunami and achieved a revival in some areas, this water iris symbolizes both the region’s recovery and the regeneration of nature.

This beautiful plant, deeply connected to Japanese culture—praised in the ancient Man’yōshū poetry anthology and appearing in Natsume Sōseki’s I Am a Cat—will be carefully nurtured within the biotope.
